A Tribute to Oliver

Oliver arrived to our Sanctuary in March of this year and, though only nine years old, his physical appearance proved that there were some underlying medical issues that needed to be addressed. Still, the Sanctuary has seen many animals in severe states and the team was ready to get to work to help love and care for this sweet cat and help him get back on his feet.

Careful observations regarding his eating, drinking, and physical capabilities were recorded. His eyes were constantly runny and he needed his ears desperately cleaned. He seemed to be drinking lots of water and having some difficulties eating. He would often not make it to the litter box and seemed to be having issues urinating. His stool was very loose and didn’t seem healthy. Along with some grooming and care, he was put on some medication to help with any abdominal issues he seemed to be having.

During those first initial weeks, despite many interventions and medications, his issues continued and seemed to be getting even worse. The team started to notice some mobility concerns, especially when jumping on the couch or even just walking about his room. He seemed like such a sweet, laidback cat, but it was clear something wasn’t right. It was then decided that Oliver needed to get an ultrasound to investigate what was truly going on.

Given Oliver’s current condition, the team was prepared for the worse, but still had hope to help Oliver. Even with a critical diagnosis, there’s been many times the Sanctuary has given quality care for those animals reaching the end of their lives, making sure they’re comfortable and content until their final time has come. Though the findings of Oliver’s ultrasound were certainly far worse than originally thought. The ultrasound revealed that Oliver had advanced renal cancer of both kidneys, a condition that even shocked the vets. Usually with our incredible resources, we’re able to provide some type of support, but the news hit hard knowing that there was nothing else that we could do to help this lovely being. The vet strongly recommended they help his passing given his severe condition and we were sadly unable to say our goodbyes.

Many animals come to the Sanctuary for help and many times we’re able to rehabilitate these animals to help them recover from severe medical conditions or past traumas. Yet, this time nature had to take its course and Oliver’s time with us on Earth had come to an end. We hope he found some comfort in the few weeks he was with us, despite not feeling his best. Maybe his happiness came from a good meal or a good nap in a heated blanket next to his window, or maybe some pleasant scratches from a friend. Our time with Oliver was short-lived, but his impact on us was strong. It’s a hard pill to swallow knowing you can’t save them all, but he became a reminder of the commitment we uphold everyday working with these precious beings. A commitment to continue helping these animals the best we can and hoping that we can change their lives for the better, even if it’s just one life. The memory of Oliver will forever stay with us, knowing he’s at peace.
