Featured Pet: Cornbread

Cornbread’s story with us began right at the start of the 2020 Covid pandemic. Right before the state mandated non-essential businesses to close, Cornbread and his pal, Skip, appeared at our Program Center. The two were left at the front door in carriers, clearly abandoned. Thankfully it didn’t seem like they were there for long, but we’re grateful we found them before our office doors were closed. After a quick visit to animal control, Cornbread and Skip were welcomed to the Sanctuary with open arms and hearts.

Cornbread was estimated to be around 8-9 years old, while Skip was estimated to be around 10. It was clear by just looking at the pair that they were in desperate need of some TLC. Cornbread was severely overweight, weighing in a little more than 20lbs, and had matted fur in areas that he was unable to reach and groom. Skip was very lethargic and underweight. A blood panel showed that he was diabetic, most likely going untreated. With now a full medical examination and treatment plan, the team went to work on helping the pair rehabilitate and get healthy.

Skip becoming the more laid-back type initially, Cornbread was enjoying all the attention and play time he was receiving every day. Though he was a little nervous at first, he quickly warmed up to all his new friends and would often greet you at the door, staring at you with wide eyes. Despite his chunky body, he was super playful and would even initiate play time by pawing at your leg, especially if you tried to leave his room! He would have his cuddly time too, enjoying head scratches in bed, and making his famous “biscuits” in the air with his front paws!

With structured meal times and some patience, it didn’t take long for Cornbread to reach a healthy weight! Though a tablespoon of extra food quickly added up and he needed to be back on a diet! Even Skip got stronger with the right diabetic care and had more energy for play time, but mostly for snuggles! Cornbread settled in well and got cuddlier as time went on. They both love taking turns receiving pets and attention from their friends. Though Skip dominated as the lap cat, you’d often catch the two on each side of your lap wanting tons of pets and love! Between the two love bugs, your hands were always kept busy! Now in excellent physical condition and ready to be showered with all the love and affection he rightfully deserves, Cornbread went up for adoption!

Though Cornbread and Skip came to the Sanctuary together and shared a room, they didn’t really seem to be bonded. They didn’t cuddle, groom each other, or play together. It was obvious they lived in a home together, but they seemed more to cohabitate than need each other for company. Therefore, Cornbread and Skip can go home separately or go to a home together as a pair. In a home, Cornbread needs structured meal times to make sure he stays the fit feline that he is today! He appreciates plenty of play time to exercise both his mind and body! And, of course, tons of love and affection is a must with his new family!
