Adopt-A-Shelter
The Adopt-a-Shelter Program pairs local Animal Control Officers with trained volunteers to provide training and enrichment opportunities to dogs in municipal shelters.
The program was designed with the knowledge of the limited time and resources many ACOs face in their daily jobs. There are three main program elements:
- Behavior Evaluations for Incoming Dogs
- Volunteer Visitation including Enrichment & Training
- Adoption Follow-Up Support through Our Companions
At Our Companions, we believe that every animal deserves a loving home. By implementing the Adopt-a-Shelter Program we hope to help find homes for the canines that have found their way into the shelter.

How to Become a Volunteer
Adopt-A-Shelter Volunteers are trained through the Canine College Volunteer Program and then partnered with local Animal Control Officers to coordinate independent training & enrichment visits.
How to Become an ACO Partner
Participating ACOs are located within 30 miles of Manchester, CT, and work directly with Our Companions staff to evaluate and approve dogs for participation in Adopt-A-Shelter. ACOs are then responsible for coordinating volunteer visits.
