Community Cat Food Drive
During this time of giving, gratitude, and community – we wanted to not only recognize the wonderful efforts of individuals and neighbors who help to care for outdoor, unowned, managed community cat colonies. We will also be facilitating a Community Cat Food Drive with Happy Cat Hotel and Spa during the entire month of November!
Our Companions collects cat food donations year round to help supply food for community cats and their dedicated caretakers. “Community cat” is a term that refers to any cat who lives outdoors AND is unowned. Community cats include both stray and feral cats. Like pet cats, they belong to the domestic cat species (Felis catus). Feral cats and outdoor, unowned cats can live full, healthy lives in their colonies outdoors, but it’s more than just feeding cats. Feeding outdoor cats is a sweet gesture, but the real issue is continuing a mission to spay and neuter these outdoor cats to decrease unwanted litters and overall outdoor cat population. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the only humane and permanently effective way to reduce the population of community cats while helping them live happy, healthy lives.
Cue the Community Cat Caretakers!
Community Cat Caretakers are motivated to keep these cats healthy, fed, while decreasing outdoor populations by spaying and neutering any cat in their managed colony. These caretakers don’t just sprinkle food around areas with cat sightings, they are people who actively participate in programs to spay and neuter all the community cats in the area, or in the cat colony. They provide food, shelters when needed, and additional medical intervention if a community cat ever appears sick or injured. Caretakers spend a lot of their own time, money, and resources to continue care for many years – and sometimes with many cats!
As winter rolls in, natural food sources diminish and our cat food donations become an essential part of managing healthy colonies. In a push for donations during the Season of Giving, Our Companions has partnered up with Happy Cat Hotel and Spa in East Granby and Windsor for a Community Cat Food Drive! The Community Cat Food Drive will continue the entire month of November. Donations can be dropped off at either Happy Cat Hotel location or sent directly to Our Companions Valerie Friedman Program Center in Manchester, CT via our Amazon Wish List!
*Dry food donations are preferred in winter months because it does not freeze like wet food can!
The folks at Happy Cat Hotel and Spa are motivated to give back to the community and to community cats throughout our state of Connecticut. We are thrilled to participate in a Community Cat Food Drive with their own compassionate cat-centered community!
