Featured Pet: Jaxon

In early 2024, Jaxon’s one and only owner had to move to an assisted living facility and sadly wasn’t able to bring Jaxon with him. With nowhere else to go, Jaxon was taken to a local municipal shelter. Jaxon was quite thin and desperately needed some dental work. During his initial vet appointment, bloodwork revealed that Jaxon had hyperthyroidism, which could explain why he was underweight. Since there was no veterinary records prior to his arrival to the shelter, the vet gave him an estimated age of around 18 years old. With his older age, recent diagnosis, and need for further care, Our Companions was contacted and we welcomed Jaxon to our Sanctuary in March of 2024.

When he arrived, Jaxon had a few mats that were shaved off, which we can imagine felt good once they were removed! Next step was to help get Jaxon’s hyperthyroidism on track and to help this thin boy gain some healthy weight. Jaxon was a bit reserved while transitioning to his new room at the Sanctuary, understandably so. Our team weren’t too sure if he could undergo anesthesia to receive dental work given his age, but once he was stable on his medication and we got the all clear from our vet, we moved forward with the treatment. Jaxon was a brave boy during this process, and once he healed, Jaxon’s personality started to blossom! By receiving the care he needed to feel healthy and happy, Jaxon was truly thriving!

This lovely guy would often welcome his visiting friends at the door with meows of hello! He would even guide you to the couch for you to sit down so he could happily claim your lap for pets and purrs! He preferred pets on his chin or cheeks, and his whiskers were quite the sight to see! He quickly stole the hearts of our community with his kind, gentle demeanor and affectionate heart!

Though he loved his naps and enjoyed soaking up the warm sun for most of the day, Jaxon did have a playful side! He had fun swatting at toys and catching them with his paws or mouth! Even at 18 years old, this boy showed us he still got it! Jaxon even helped us in a recent fundraiser and was able to complete a balance beam, while licking up delicious treats along the way! So impressive! Just check out those “muscles”!

Our staff kept tabs on Jaxon’s thyroid levels and weight during those first few months at our Sanctuary. Though his thyroid levels were doing great and he was doing well health-wise, he was still quite thin. Our team worked diligently with Jaxon to help increase in appetite with food he liked and monitored his meal times to see when and what he was eating. With some extra TLC, Jaxon started to gain a bit more weight, his coat started to shine, and he had more energy than ever before! He will always have a slender figure, but we’re glad he’s at such a great point in his mental and physical health.

Now healthy and happy, Jaxon is hoping to find a home of his very own! He would truly appreciate someone that can adore him, continue his care, and give Jaxon a wonderful life during his golden years! His hyperthyroidism is easily managed by medication twice a day. Since he loves soaking up all your attention, and all the sunny spots he can find, Jaxon would do best in an only pet household in a quiet, calm home. Welcoming this boy into your life, you’re welcoming lots of love, happiness, and lap cuddles!
